Hi, first post!

I have recently started working on my red 1984 924 NA - having lots of fun and very thankful for 924board.org!

I have a (long) list of things to bring the car up to speed, except one undiagnosed sound. It's the same sound as in this clip

Essentially, it whines like in the clip when under acceleration, goes away when coasting.

Does anyone recognise the sound, and could perhaps help with diagnosis?

Ross.

My current mobile connection will not allow me to hear the sound clip, however I can say that transaxle noise is common in our cars and can vary widely between individual cars. Setting gear lash is a critical art and is not easily addressed by the home mechanic. I have seen some very loud transmissions last a very long time.

ok , a few questions first
what gearbox do you have?
how much oil is in the trans?
what type of oil do you have in it?
how old is the oil, when was it last changed?

so far as the whine, these gearboxes are fairly well engineered, as it's not under load the noise will dissipate but most issues are with syncros before anything else.
Lastly do you have the insulating rubber mat and carpet in the back hatch? The trans noise is 200% louder without it

Thanks for the replies:

I've only had this car 2 weeks, most of which it's been on stands working on other issues. I'm not sure what oil is in there, I suppose a good start would be to dump it and freshen it up.

What oil are people recommending?

The rear sound deadening and hatch carpet are still in place.

It's a 1984 NA with a 5 speed manual. I'm not sure how to identify which exact transmission it has?

SAE 80 or GL4 specs
FYI you need a male hex key 17mm for the transaxle fillers and loosen both before you attempt draining,
