Just received a manual steering rack from the salvage yard. Turns nicely, but I still think I'd like to clean out all the old grease and regrease it. Anyone over done this? Recommendations?

Thanks!

Hey Rasta, I repacked my steering rack, there is a black plastic knob at the bottom of the rack that pushes in, it doesnt screw in. I removed that and turned the rack all the way to one side and cleaned out as much of the old grease as possible then turned back the other way and did the same. I repeated over and over then I packed new grease in and turned side to side again. I think you maybe be able to add grease through the bottom where the plug goes but I just replaced it with a new cap. Let me know how it goes.

I did mine per the directions in the tech section here on the site and they were right on. A tapered bolt for centering the rack was handy and note the position of the bolt on the pinch clamp of the steering shaft with both the steering wheel and the rack centered before pulling out the pinion. You have to loosen the centering bolt when reinserting the pinion as the rack will move a bit as the pinion rotates in. It may take a time or two. Try not to ruin the pinion bearing like I did by forcing it in. Bearings available at any bearing house SKF 1012 needle bearing(I bought 2 if you end up needing one). I got a grease fitting with the right thread pitch for the centering hole at NAPA.

A good stiff bra will pick up a tired rack.
