I have a 1977 Martini and Rossi, I do not have the Owners Manual, and the Haynes does not say...
How much oil to put in!? Gulp! I just don't want to overfill.
Lastly how do I tell if my car is a 1977 OR a 1977.5? Thanks everybody

I dont remember how much it is for an na, maybe 4.5 l? It doesnt matter, the most important is not to fill all at once, take it step by step and check on the dip stick continuously and you wont have any problems. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

if you change oil + filter, it is very wisely to 'start'/crank the engine with ignition/fuel disconnected to build up initial pressure.
edit: not sure but I believe it is less than 5liters. Filling and dipping is the way I always do it. Unless I don't trust the dipstick. _________________ "Rule: Turbo's make torque, and torque makes fun." (C. Bell)

It should take no more than 4.5L. I did mine recently (though it is an '82) and that's how much came out into the catch tray, so that's how much I put back in.
Haynes recommend you fill the oil filter with oil before screwing it in. The stated reason is that otherwise you risk running the engine without oil for as much as 45 seconds.

Yes.
And because the answers above seemed a little vague and because I happen to have access to the factory workshop manual, I'll put forward what it states:
Engine oil change
-with filter change about 5.28 US qts (4.4 Imp. qts or 5.0 litres)
-without filter change about 4.75 US qts (3.95 Imp. qts or 4.5 litres) _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

I just changed oil this saturday.
I put 0.5 liter in the filter as per the Haynes, slowly, and let it set for 10 minutes. Then put the filter on, and filled the engine.
With the oil up to the max, I had still some left from the 5 liter can. _________________ 1983 NA Alpineweiss since 2001

Guess it was'nt such a noobie question after all!
Thank you everybody for your help. I changed the oil and filter this past weekend and my car took about 5qrts. About .35 of a quart in the filter and just about 4.7 quarts in the engine. I will run the car up to full op temp and triple check my work but all is well now.
Thanks agin everybody. Now off to change the tranny fluid! |
