Seems not much interesting subjects lately, so Im making my effort to liven things up.
Lets say Porsche employed you to design / engineer the 924 engine
(keep in mind the original 2 litre engine)way back in the 70's what would you have changed /done/modified/ extracted/included in either the N/A or turbo engine.
A bit of specific information giving specs, reasons, advantages in the design/engineering would help make the topic more interesting.

The only thing specifically that stands out to me would be a larger base engine. 2.0 liters should never have made it into a Porsche. 2.5L or the later 3L would have made the base tufah a LOT more fun and the added TQ would have made the turbo cars a real FORCE to contend with back then.
Of course the new engine would have made it more expensive since they had already done all of the R&D for VW. But oh well... _________________ '80 924 Turbo - SOLD!

I wold have made the engine bigger and put balance shafts on it to make it as smooth as a v8. _________________ 87 924s

Guys we must remember that the 2 lit engine did quite well during its life span in competion.
Also isnt the 2 lit bullet proof and easy to modify when funds are available? remember the DP, GT< GTS GTR AND GTP. Mods for a road legal car would or might have been considered from these models.
So not taking bigger engines and a higher price tag into consideration, what would you as an engineer have done to make a 924 NA or turbo feel like a Porsche as some say.

Lighter weight pistons/rods, better flowing heads and slightly more compression would have been nice. _________________ 81 924 N/A

Make it non-interference and add a balance shaft. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

I think it would have been cool to have the 3.0L 911SC engine in there. Keep it in the front, keep the tranny in the back, just give me the iconic Porsche engine. _________________ Fred- 1979 924 |

Non interference, balance shaft and have a crossover exhaust so the turbo is on the correct side like a 951. _________________ 1979 931 with a 350 chev

minor bodywork changes, like flush door handles, aerodynamic mirrors, side lights that aren't mistaken for roadside reflectors on the US models... maybe some kind of a barrier between the hood and windshield so shere isn't a gap there. _________________ proud owner of a 1979 924 Sebring Edition with a 931 trans that looks horrible but somehow runs... |

As a competition engine it did fine because in competition low RPM's and lag can be avoided. On the street, an extra half of a liter to full liter would have been nice.
Would also have been nice to use forged pistons and lighter/stronger rods and hardware.
External bypass valve located closer to the throttle body, intercooled, let's see what else... _________________ '80 924 Turbo - SOLD!

Have to remember that it was faster than most of its competitiors back then, at least if you read reviews in old magazines. I like the simple sturdy engine, would have been perfect with turbo head hotter cam and minor tweaks to lift the power curve a bit so it would have revved about 7200 and max power about 145-150 hp. Still with retained cheap maintanance and low consumption . If it wasnt for internal politics it would surely have more than 125hp..
The turbo engine is really good for its time, FMIC and forged pistons would have been great with about 225hp. water cooled turbo a nice bonus
Larger heavy engine no thanks. Would have been nice though with an aluminum block if they could have kept the strenght. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

I don't know if I would change any of the little stuff, the quirky bits give it it's character. Like window wipers on the wrong side for right hand drive cars.
The American N/A cars with only 95-110 hp was a mistake and from what I understand caused some image damage to the model.
But what I would change if I could is, I would have made the Carrera GT the series 2 turbo model. |

One major thing I left out! Quicker steering! You really have to saw on the wheel if you hit back to back tight turns! _________________ 81 924 N/A
