Got out of my night class then went to drive home, but every time I hit a bump the car would go limp for a second then come back. It did this on the way to school once so at first I didn't think much of it. I take this road quite often.
On my way back though, I have to go up a big hill on the freeway, and it's poorly paved so a lot of bumps kept on making the car go limp. Then I lost almost all my power and could smell extremely rich fuel and hear a crackling near my fuses and relay. After that I hit one more small bump on the road and the car shut off, but as I pulled over, I heard the relay shorting out even with the car off, most likely the DME relay.
I'm going to take a look at it in the morning, but I'm thinking somehow my DME relay shorted out. I bought it brand new in June of 2010. If not that, then a crank sensor? I say that, because the tach would show 0 rpm then go back. Who knows, maybe you guys have an idea. I have never had something like this happen before. _________________ Guards Red 1987 Porsche 924S (Automatic)

Based on the your observations of the tach, I would first check the speed/reference sensors and associated wiring. If it looks crusty/crappy at all, and you don't know when they were replaced, it is worth replacing them.
I recently found some Facet repalcements that are pretty cheap compared to OEM:
Link at Pelican.
If that stuff looks good, check the connection to the DME computer under the dash. Sometimes the computers fail (broken traces), it's nice to have a known good spare for testing purposes.

Dang.. I had a spare DME from an 86 944 parts car but I sold it. I knew should have kept it...
I also have a good spare crank sensor.
I'm worried about replacing one of the crank sensors though because I know the harness is very sensitive and if it's moved the car won't start.
I think what I'll do first is check that DME relay and open it up.
Thanks for your help, and the link if I need another one. _________________ Guards Red 1987 Porsche 924S (Automatic)

You mean, on this particular car, or these cars in general? _________________ Toofah King Bad

These cars in general? At least I was told that.. Removing one I heard is risky because it could move the harness and cause a no-start.
Also, it was the relay. The entire fuse box is able to move freely about 1-2" and that was enough to dislodge the DME relay. Surprised it hadn't happened sooner. _________________ Guards Red 1987 Porsche 924S (Automatic)

Not that I am aware of. Anyway, glad you got it sorted out. _________________ Toofah King Bad
