Hi everyone, I've really appreciated this board after 3 years of DD'ing my 1980 931...but an unexpected problem has surfaced.

Due to new CO emissions requirements, I had to take her in for a checkup and the VIN on the front pillar (windshield) was missing.

Is there ANYWHERE else on the car I can find one? I have the title and a matching VIN/engine # on the original sales brochure, along with photo documentation from a previous owner.

Unfortunately it was painted badly, and inside the engine comp so I'm hoping it got painted over? I can find one around the battery or on the doorjams.

The car is documented here, it's a great runner! And yes the VIN tag shown matches my title, but it's not on the car.

Thanks for any help you can offer!!

when looking at the engine bay from the front, the left side shock mount should have the vin engraved on it.

Thanks Scriblz, I'll check for that tonight. I'm sure it's been spray painted over; is it a deep enough engraving I could scrub the primer off? Is it directly on the flat surface of the mount where you circled?

Thanks again for the quick reply, Cheers!

Well I thought I would have noticed that...looked again last night and it's currently missing. Any other places to check?
Thanks

i think your best bet is to sand the paint off of the shock tower. there was a sticker in the drivers door jam originally with the vin on it as well but it sounds like you dont have that anymore.

Missing? These pics are from the guy you bought it from, and both VIN plates are clearly visible. The one under the hood is almost legible:

Now you're saying BOTH plates are gone? They are illegal to remove. . .something is rotten.

Yeah it's lame...the pic's are from the PPO who did a great job with everthing. Then some moron got ahold of it and that's who I bought it from; hence the engine bay primer and bad paintjob. I never bothered to look into the VIN when I got it and the first time it came up was when I drove into emission inspection office. Lesson learned.

Anyway I don't know what to do...car's in great shape would be a real shame to part her out...been my DD for...wow almost 3 years now with no major work. Handles better in the twisty mountain roads than any car I've driven.

I'm open to any ideas...thanks.

BTW, that white emissions sticker which shows the VIN is still on the windshield...but I doubt that would hold water in the eyes of the inspector.

Hmm, I call shenanigans. When would you ever do that?

Only time i've ever seen something like this happen is when a car has been declared "totalled, for salvage or parts only" and they remove the tags so it can't ever be retitled/registered for the street.

I understand that US Gov't does this with all the crash test cars they, um, process. Cut em in half and remove the tags so someone can't weld two parts of a carrera GT together or something and have a new car. Doubt that's the case here but it might be an insurance company variant if they've paid off on a claim and don't want the car back on the road.

Any history of accident/flood/fire/disaster damage?
