i have a 77 924 that is cranking but not firing it fired yesterday and now it is having problems. i redid some wiring and cleaned some grounds and i looked up and i saw something smoking after i reconnected the ground. there a seperate small cylinder with two almost d battery sized things on both sides. it connects to the distrubutor. i think that it says transistor on the side. anyways one of the d battery sized things was getting so hot it began burning a rubber cord it was touching. what are these parts? also what would be an easy way to test the distributor for correct firing. and if you have had similar problems what did you do to correct them.

thanks

The two resistors or ballasts smoke because they get hot from cranking it over so much. Do you have fuel and spark?

Wait, you're broke and bought a non-running 924 as a commuter car?

There are three things you need, spark, compression and fuel.

I doubt the compression will go wrong overnight, it is usually something that gets progressivley worse unless you have done something like run the engine until it gets really really hot (usuall on physically large gaskets such as a straight six), or run it with the oil light on.

So you can probably safely say it's fuel or spark.

A lazy way to check the fuel is there is to crank the engine for 20 seconds with full throttle applied, then get someone to put their nose at the exhaust and crank it while sniffing (again applying full throttle), if you smell petrol out the exhaust then theres fuel there.

To check the spark, take out a spark plug (or get another spark plug) and and connect one spark lead to the spark plug that you have either taken out or found from somewhere, place this on the engine block and look for a spark jumping across the end of the electrode while you crank the engine over, it should be nice and bright, blueish in colour, when it's yellow it is normally a sign of a weak spark.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT MESS AROUND WITH MOVING THE DISTRIBUTOR.

You will adjust the timing and have to start from scratch, this should not have changed.

One of the three is missing, hope this helps.

Personally, with beetle parts being so cheap and the zinc oxide electroplating on the shell, this is the cheapest classic car you will ever own.

Clever choice. Good luck.
