All,
I have about 20-30 degrees of play in my steering. Tie rod ends are fine (new) tightened up the rack adjustment with no success. This was not always the case, this car had perfect go cart steering at one point many years ago. The steering wheel linkage is tight. The play can be seen clearly at the top of the rack where the steering shaft enters the rack.

Is this repairable/rebuildable?

Regards,
Bruce

You may be able to replace/rebuild the steering rack.

The problem with steering racks is that they tend to wear in the staight ahead position, you can adjust them so there is no play at that point and then the rack becomes stiffer as you turn a corner because that part of the rack is not worn, if you adjust it so the tolerances are ok at the end of the rack and see how it is in the middle, it will give you an idea of how much the rack is worn at its most used area. It is usually the large lump of metal with teeth (the rack itself) that wears once the sufrace hardening has worn through, you can buy a replacement part, you might even want to fit a higher ratio aftermarket part, i think a company called QUAIFE do one for the MK1 GOLF GTi which is I believe the VW/AUDI parts bin that was raided to build the 924. Just be aware they turned the rack upside down, so a LHD 924 needs a RHD golf GTi rack. I am sure someone else will post here just to double check I am not giving you bum steer.
