Hello guys,
I was around a couple of years ago but have been rather quiet since my ex-931's smoking problem got out of hand. Not being such a technical wizard and not having a thick enough wallet, I passed the car over to a more skilled mechanic.
After the 931 I took the Boxster S route with Techart goodies. Theat car was really quick. Just as I was a bout to sell it the engine blew. Luckily the buyer liked the car so much that he agreed to pay half of the replacement engine. Off went the Boxster.
Last summer I was in search of a little old Porsche but nothing really felt right. Then rather late in the autumn came for sale a rather interesting 931. After a few emails and calls and getting really excited about the car the owner told me the car was no longer for sale. He had decided to keep it. As a consolation I then bought myself a really nice -87 944S. It drove like a train on tracks but there was just one slight downfall, it lacked the turbo boost factor... so I sold it after having kept it in the garage for a few months.
A few weeks ago the same 931 I was trying to buy last fall was up on the market again. This time the deal went through and I'm back in.
She is a red 1981 S2 RoW model from Sweden. Unfortunately the car came with no documented history but judging by the way it looks and feels its been treated rather well. It's definitely not a concource car but I would say its a very nice driver for its age. The paint is more than good enough for me and the interior is in very good order except of the seat fabric which is one of the least attractive to my eyes and the drivers seat has seen better days. What really made it for this car is a 99,9% crack free dash It runs very smoothly and starts instantly cold, hot, luke warm... The gears are crisp and sharp. Its also got an extremely good suspension setup with Bilstein sports built to coilovers in the front and Bilstein Sport Nordsleife edition in the back. I drove the car very hard on the track on Saturday and it was absolutely great. The 928 S4 8x16" ET 52,3 wheels look really nice although I wonder how the 225/50/16 tyres fit in the front... the backs are 245/45/16. I'll need to check if 7x16" ET 65 would fit in the front...
Its all not hugs and kisses though. The turbo has a bit of excess play and whistles quite loudly, so a rebuild is due sometime in the future. The whistle might be due to cracks in the vacuum tubes (added a photo in the end, need to check with Dan and order his set if its OK with RoW cars). The clutch is not new anymore but hopefully will last at least this summer. Then there are the compulsory small fixes... passenger side electric window doesn't work, the fan works but is stuck on hot, the oil pressure lies on the right, the clock ticks but doesn't show time, the drivers side lock is loose, the odometer is stuck and so on...
Here's a few shots of the car:

Looks just great! Just out of interest, does this car smoke at all? On startup, 2 minutes after start, acceleration, deceleration etc. ?
I see you visited Ahvenisto track with your car. Good way to test the purchase _________________ Mikko

Moi Mikko!
Regarding smoking initially when I bought the car it didn't smoke. Then one day, the first day I went to work wit it and had to stand in traffic for quite some time it started to smoke. I thought, not again...
However, I think (hope) the major cause was Castrol RS 0W-40. After switching over to "factory standard" Valvoline Racing 20W-50 it doesn't really smoke anymore. After one spirited track session I let the car idle for quite a few minutes and got a small puf of smoke but it went a way rather quickly.
Yep, I was at Ahvenisto giving the 931 a test drive. The suspension is absolutely fantastic on track. The turbo is not quite as crisp as in my previous car with the rebuilt 937 turbo (which I guess is in your car at the moment ). This might be at least partially due to the cracked vacuum lines and the rather loud whistle indicating tha turbo is not giving 100% response. Therefore I had to give the GT3's a bit of slack on track _________________ 931 S2, 1981 |
