I have a persistent problem with my steering wheel, specifically the contact for the slip ring for the horn button. It likes to ground itself against the surrounding switch mounts, which (obviously) sounds the horn! I did add some insulation tape under it, hoping that that would fix the problem, but it's either shifted or hasn't worked.

One thing that I did notice is that the wheel and the column have some play. Pulling the wheel towards me can solve the problem. That makes me wonder if there isn't a spacer I'm somehow missing. The Haynes book shows it, but I don't have such a thing.

For the meantime, I've pulled the horn fuse. Which is slightly inconvenient, as it means I have no horn. But that's be

the answer is yes, there's meant to be a spacer,
i've seen two types; a more rubbery plastic one, and a hard plastic one with some grooves in it.
normally they come with the bearing when you buy it....
I was also missing it on this car, but having an abundant supply of welding gas bottle blanking plugs (plastic) I noticed they were almost identical give a slightly larger diameter, cut the bottom out and a slit in the side and viola, instant spacer.
now don't ask me if it will either last or is a means of insulating the horn contact but it's working for now...

Okay, I guess I can fabricate something. Do you know how thick it is supposed to be.

I'm confused. Harm, where does that go? Between the lock bearing and the steering wheel?

Wade.

Yes, that is the spacer between the lock bearing and the steeringwheel.

Harm you are amazing! If I had a 3D printer, I could make one!

Spacer in and the immediate benefit is that the vertical play in the steering is gone! Wonderful! Next step is to put the horn fuse back in, though I'm going to wait a few days and make sure I don't hear the relay clicking at inopportune moments.
