If one were hypothetically looking for the following:- 3 season season daily driver / grocery getter / pleasure driving
- No track time
- NOT a project car
- Dealer- or shop-maintained (i.e. no shade tree repairs)
- Modestly modified OK (i.e. suspension upgrades or tastefully executed power adders
- Reliability a must
What do y'all think?
928S4?
951?
968?
Boxster?
Mid-80s SC?
930?
964?
Early 911/911T?
914/6? _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Hands down 84-86 Carrera
Good power
Great sound
Reliable
and a nice one could be had for 16-17K
*Note* If you are 6ft or taller don't get an 85, the seat mounts are 3/4" higher that year and it will be cramped. 86' returned to orginal mount height. _________________ 1981 931 CGT replica, OEM CGT intercooler, .8 BAR WG spring, GTS Headlights, Innovative Wide band A/F, A/C delete, 16" Fuchs, Weltmeister 200lb lowering springs, Bilstein HDs front, Koni Sport rears. |

It'd have to be a 964, 968 or 986.
The Boxster would be the best value for money, when you're getting up around twenty grand, I'd wager. You could get a later S for that.
You could probably come close to getting the best 968 around for twenty grand. Same for a 951. But even the youngest ones are getting pretty long in the tooth these days.
As for a 964, despite being an obsessive 911 fan, I know next to nothing about them in terms of reliability, least worst (or, at least, cheapest to fix) idiosyncrasies, whatever. So I'm going purely from a Classic and Sports Car series about one of the contributors that had a long-termer and really liked it.
Is it possible to get a 993 for that money? That's the one I'd want.
But a 930, an early 911... a 914?! C'mon, you can't be serious? _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

i cant belive you put the 914 and the early 911 and you didnt put the 924...i mean....wtf?!
i'd have the 968...all the others are too expensive to maintain for a simple daily driver. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Ahem, the '85 Carrera Coupe, which I have, is incredibly reliable-once you figure out all the electrical bugs! The build quality is amazing, but, like any P-car they don't like to sit. I have early sports seats, which are manual and lower, works for this 6 foot twoer. The 915 transmission takes some time to work for you, but once figured out, not a problem. _________________ '83 944 Track car.

Agreed on the 3.2. Pure beast.
Boxster engine problems are too numerous to mention. . .really puts teeth in the old axiom, "no such thing as a cheap Porsche." _________________ Toofah King Bad

I'd go for a v8 for a daily driver
I think it should be the more comfortable on long runs _________________ 1979 924 NA |

There is more than cylinder number that goes into calculating gas consumption...
The 928s4 has proper furl injection, some of the carbed 911 mentionned are surely worst on gas consumption.
Also a v8 will not work a hard on highway speed and will run at lower rpm then the some other cars mentionned which might ueld better mpg
Also i would definetly got hardtop for daily driver. _________________ 1979 924 NA |
