|
|
Hey all it looks like I have scored big on the travel front. If all goes well I have to go to Lichtenstein for work next week and I have decided to visit Stuttgart for a few days as well. Turns out the airfare to fly to and from Zurich is only $8 cheaper than flying to Stuttgart first then home from Zurich. I have a great boss that says 'No problem,go for it". So thats the plan. Fly into Stuttgart and spend a day and a half there at my leisure then catch the train from there down to Zurich and a ride into Lichtenstein for 40 minutes work and a day later, home.
The advice im looking for is from anyone that has been to Stuttgart personaly. What to see, what not to see etc. Obviously the 2 big things for me are the Porsche museum and the Mercedes museum. Anything else worth noting ?
Any real life advice is greatly appreciated.

I have been there twice in recent years, and have seen the old and new Porsche museums and the merc one along with factory tours from both marques. Both are fantastic and a vist would soley justify a trip to Germany IMHO. Compared to the rest of Germany though, I found the city and its attractions quite bland.
If you only have a few days, between factory tours and museums you can spend a full day at both Porsche and Merc. _________________ Over the top of skyline, total brake failure.... hit the wall at over 200 kp/h at the dipper, so anyone who has to brake for the esses is a pussy.

Hi, I agree with Daniel, cancel everything else and hit the museums. I have been through Mercedes but not Porsche. Two days only will leave you sick for more and my money is on you returning within 6months to a year if not sooner. Wish I had a boss like that!! Just watch out for the beer it'll damn near kill after your American beers. Enjoy!!
sorry about the American business, a good Canadian will think they are in heaven. ANY BEER in Germany beat anywhere else in the world, just watch out for the bar wenches!! as my buddy says " those Gernman girls grow t&**s before they grow teeth. Take lots of pics. _________________ oldcarman-77 porsche 924 and one of the ugliest motorhomes on earth. |

I would also second seeing the museums. The Porsche one is great, plan for about 5 hours in the museum if you actually look at everything (and the 917's and GTR warrant more than one look). Great coffee and snack bar on the first floor of the museum where you can look into the garage where they do the resto's. Almost as cool as the rest of the museum.
While I was there I went to eat at the late Field Marshal Rommel's family hunting lodge (which is now surrounded by the city) and the food was excellent. Just google the restaurant and you will be able to get to it.
Have fun!
Cheers,

great to see that a guy from my favorit world city (VC) is going to hit Stuttgart.
I wish Stuttgart wouldt be 10% of the exictement that Vancouver presents,
but, for my opinion it is very boring. If you are in the local "Fussgängerzone" and get a coffee, you see all these Porsche employees driving arround in there company cars....every 15 seconds a diffrent Porsche...post your vid on the board.
Been in stuttgart my self two times for the Testing Expo, automotive world expierince, big time...

I booked a hotel about a 5 minute walk from the Konigstrasse and main train station. That lets me walk around to shop and chill at my leisure and also puts me a 7 minute train to both museums. Wiuld like to spend more time there exploring but just couldnt manage the time off. Cant really complain about a free trip... _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

Just got back from a visit to the area - sadly, though we spent a day in Stuttgart, no chance to do much sightseeing - far too busy with the work schedule. So no Porsche museum, no Mercedes museum (which I hear from coworkers is even more impressive, but I dunno), and no visit to Zuffenhausen - had to settle for looking at the sign when we slowly drove by on the highway.
Construction seems to be pretty bad in that area, and apparently will continue for a while?
Was also frustrating to be driving by the Hockenheimring on the way down from Frankfurt (where we flew in to - only direct flight from Detroit) and see all the signs for the Grand Prix, but no chance to stick around and watch... so I drive home right by it, get on a plane, come home, and watch the race from thousands of miles away instead...
PS - coming from Michigan, the beer was generally kind of weak, but mostly still good quality and flavor for what it was. Other than one altbier I stumbled across, mostly on tap the darkest thing was a hefe dunkle... maybe I just need to go back during the cold months... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Hallo Leute!
Bier und Bratwurst? Kanada? Elche (Moose) Wald und Robbenschlächter.....
Also ich wuerde das Mercedes Museum vorziehen, Porsche ist zu technokratisch und zu 911 (Der Plattgeschlagene Kaefer) verliebt.
Get yourself a Porsche car from sixt for a day (200 mile free) and try to hit the Autobahn (Dont take the A81!!) _________________ NA 924 - april/1977- 4-speed-audi gearbox.

Haven't been to the porsche museum but the mercedes is absolutely awesome. be prepared to spend as much time as you can because there's soooo much history it's hard to take it all in. When you go into the entrance they'll give you a portable unit in whichever language you want to put in front of the story screens. I still get goosies thinking about it. _________________ oldcarman-77 porsche 924 and one of the ugliest motorhomes on earth. |

God damn....
So I hit both the Porsche and Mercedes museums, both are fantastic for different reasons. The scales tip to the Porsche museum though I think because of all the racing history there. Mercedes was kind of lacking in this regard. Also at Porsche you could walk up and touch each and every car-no exceptions while at Mercedes you could get close to some but certainly not the really cool race stuff. The race simulator at Merc is pretty cool tho,4 euro well spent !
Then off to Balzers,Lichstenstein. $.85 in a cab, coast to coast.... just kidding but pretty close. Went up to Malbun ski area for some schnitzel,AWSOME. Then down to the hotel for a night of beers with our salesman and some travelling Germans. Just heaven really. And now I am writing this sitting in a hotel in Zurich's old town. Just going out for a bite and some beers. This town has some money. Ferraris and Porsches and Maseratis and Bentleys everywhere. Reminds me of home. Just the right amount of pink haired freaks too. Fantastic.
And for a bonus I just found out British Airways has upgraded me for the flight home. God bless the Queen.
Thanks for all of the advice and opinions guys. Or Tschuss as they say... _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive
