Anyone ever tried to put an early 944 tranny in a 924? So far this seems to be the most feasible solution for my woes. The donor car it's an 85.5.

Yes, BTDT, some gears are a touch tall, but works well otherwise. Pretty sure we wrote this up a few times...

Isn't there a shaft diameter difference? I seem to remember Ideola hammering on me about that before....

I think the 924 turbo and the 944 share the same shaft diameter, but the 924 NA and the 944 do not.

The 924S and 944 also share the same shaft, but then the 924S is just a 944 in a slinky dress

So I think you'd have to swap the clutch disc and torque tube or swap the input shaft of the 944 trans.

Yes, there is a drive shaft diameter difference between the 924 NA and the 2.5L cars. If I remember correctly, the input shaft on the 924NA Audi-based trans is also shorter, meaning that you can't easily make a coupler adapter either. The one sure way to make this work is to replace the 924 torque tube with the 944 torque tube, and then install a Bronco II clutch disc, which can be run with the NA cable operated setup without requiring the entire hydraulic clutch setup found in the 931 and later 2.5L cars.

Exactly - use the 944 torque tube, Bronco II clutch disc, and you'll also need the shift rod from the 944 if you're putting it in a (formerly) 4-speed 924.

The clutch from a freakin' ford bronco!? That's hilarious. There is some info in the tech section of 924.org as well and it seems to indicate that I will also need the mounts and a crossmember for the torsion bars in addition the shifter and linkage... Thanks for the knowledge guys. You rule! Oh and btw it is currently a 5-speed if that affects anything. Well at least now I know it is doable.

No, you won't need to change any mounts etc - it's a bolt-in.

But what's wrong with the 5-speed? Consider rebuilding? Gearing will be better...
