While I've been waiting for engine parts on the CGT project, I bought a cheap paint buffer. The car has an oxidized orange look to it, from the Arizona sun. The sills and interior are still the original nice red paint. After wrestling with the orbiting machine, and a few cold ones, the paint is coming back. More of a reddish-orange than completely red.

Was wondering if anyone has had any luck doing this? I want to get it back enough to sorta match the red CGT fender and bumper kit. It takes about 3 applications with the machine, probably more for a truer red. Not looking for showroom quality for a track car. Pics to follow. yo.

I would try some wet sanding first. your paint sounds like the latest 85.5 944 I picked up. Some 600 to 1000 grit wet sanding will take a lot of work out of your buffing. Just be careful on the edges.

You will be able to see the orange drop away and know when you are down to the good paint. keep in mind that you will have a bit of orange/red pigment on the driveway so may want to do think about where you want the colored ground.

The only time I ever sand the paint is when trying to remove defects such as orange peel. 600 grit is for extreme blemish removal on small areas or for paint prep. If you sand the whole car with 600 grit, you're going to have one hell of a time polishing the paint again.

The front of this VW was resprayed years ago and had a terrible finish. I was able to smooth the paint using only 1200 grit.

Here it is, once polished. The 1200 grit was more than enough for this job and would be overkill for removing oxidization.

As you can see, the resprayed area still doesn't match the color of the rest of the car, because the wrong paint was used. No amount of polishing will fix that and could explain why your fenders don't match.

If the paint is in good shape, there is no reason to sand. Oxidization is easily removed with the right products. (You won't find this stuff at auto-zone or walmart.)

You'll need to find a paint shop in your area that sells 3M perfect-it 06085 step 1. The cheap rubbing compounds that are sold at walmart cannot remove 3000 grit sand paper scratches, much less a layer of paint. This 3M compound will remove 1200 grit sand paper and is all you'll need.

You can make the paint glossier with some additional steps, but those are usually reserved for show cars.

Sorry about the long post, but I hope that it answers some of your questions.
