|
|
Ok... someone feel free to school me on the starters for these cars. I burned one up (got pissed, kept trying to start the car, it got way too hot and it cranks a whopping 100rpm now). I didn't think you could actually burn one up, I just wanted to start it... but yeah. You definitely can.
I had a spare off of a parts car. Went to install it and it didn't fit. But BARELY didn't fit. Just a tad too big and just a hair too long, so it rubbed up against the block a little and apparently up against the passenger side motor mount. Thought that was a bit odd since it came off of a later car and I was under the assumption that one size fit all for these cars. Apparently my assumption was way off.
So basically I'm in need of a starter. But what is the differences?
Since I'm using megasquirt it seems to be REALLY picky about the actual rpms at cranking. 150 or less and the car just will not start. I need around 300-400 it seems. Now... I bench tested the other starter and holy crap does it spin a hell of a lot faster than the one I burned up, but since it doesn't fit, it makes me wonder: Are all options for these cars "same fit" options?
What is the differences between years? Cranking rpm? Draw? Etc...
I did some searching on the forums and didn't find much, and I am not seeing any after market solutions that I can find. I see that rockauto offers some, but of course, sometimes it's a crap shoot ordering online if I can't find one that fits.
Pelican offers only 924S/944 starters...
I am currently unable to start the track car :-/ _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)

Probably not the answer you're after…
My old vs new.

Had the same thing happen to me on the race car. Took the old one out and the new one was different -- Bosch rebuilt IIRC, not from Porsche factory. The barrel, if you want to call it that, was different, very much like the pickie above. My guess is the original part has been superceded and (now, coming from some other car originally) is a "best fit" kind of thing rather than "exact fit".
There's also the whole hi-torque starter thing we could talk about but that's for another thread.
Also, the turbo starter turns in the opposite direction of the n/a. |

In my neck of the woods; Yes.
I went to the starter/altenator/battery shop for a rebuild at the time and they said it was possible.
When negotiating over the price of refreshing & rebuilding it he mentioned the lighter new starter unit that would cost only about €30 more…
He had the unit already on the shelf and I was in a hurry to get the Toofah running again.
Now the old unit is still in need for a rebuild
Cheers,
Harm. _________________ Porsche 924 NA 1982 LY7A/A3A3 _ Greater driving pleasure never harmed anyone.

Anywhere from $50 to $225 re-manufactured (I cannot find any "new"). _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)

I can confirm that the ones ideola sells do the trick on starting my high compression race engine even when stinking hot with fouled plugs _________________ Over the top of skyline, total brake failure.... hit the wall at over 200 kp/h at the dipper, so anyone who has to brake for the esses is a pussy.

I'll check the part # on mine as both are bosch starters on mine too. It's very odd since the 2nd bosch i have is longer by about half an inch and MUCH taller. I'm still trying to wrap it around my head how it would have even fit on another car of another year with the same block unless the motor mounts were different and the block was slightly different? I'm unaware of any differences on N/A year to year that would cause this. I can confirm that I definitely pulled it off of a parts car though that was only 2-3 years different from mine. _________________ - 1977 Porsche 924 2.0 N/A (Trackday Project)
