Ladies and gentlemen of the forum,
I have been getting valuable tips and stuff from this forum for years, lots of knowledge in this community for sure. I never posted anything, because I never really needed to as others have asked the same or similar questions before me, and I read just fine...but now I need to be a pain and ask a favour.
Last fall I got an '88 "S" with a blown head gasket, a spare wrecker engine, and a steering gear for a price I couldn't refuse. My problem lies in that it was partially disassembles several years ago for the engine swap, but it was never completed. The p/s pump was in the hatch, the strut missing and the belt in the back seat. The replacement engine had a broken bracket on the lower housing, the steering pump I find out is from an older 944, there is no lower pump bracket for the strut, and basically nothing to compare to. I bought a strut and belt, I think I can fab the lower bracket, most of the hydraulics are there, I swapped balance shaft housings and here in lies my question.
If anyone has a decent photo or 2 of the upper pivot arrangement, I would really appreciate it (or them) to see what I'm still missing or have to make, and the general arrangement of bushings, bolts and nuts for assembly. I have service manuals, print and online, great b/w pics in them...more "B" than "W", parts blowups and the like, but nothing with a good view of what it's supposed to look like when all is said and done.
This is about the only thing that I can beef about with the swap, and I'm sure I can figure it out or make it up as I go along. I just thought that there have been several people into their engines on this forum, and maybe someone took photos while it was apart.
Thanks for the years of info, and maybe even some pics. _________________ So...tell me again....how many splines to a minute and how many minutes to an inch? |

I just finished installing my pump a few months ago. Sadly, I didn't get any pictures, but I do remember how it all went together.
The two top mounts use hollow cylindrical spacers. They not only allow the pump to swivel once the bolts are torqued, they ease installation.
The strut mount is basically a triangle with holes in each corner. The top two holes connect to the pump, and the bottom is for the strut. It would be very easy to make one.
I made this diagram, it's not great, but I hope it helps!

Thanks very much for the note and diagram. I did figure out that the spacers were there and made a bracket that works fine. Pretty simple once you have everything all together in the same place. Had to take the pump apart and put in thread inserts, 2 of 4 were pulled out...
Thanks again for the info. _________________ So...tell me again....how many splines to a minute and how many minutes to an inch? |
