Anyone know what the difference is between them and will the later interior fit in the earlier car? I know the 924s has a different engine etc, I am not interested in that only the interior. cheers

If your 924 is from 1982 or above most things will fit ok. The only thing you can have problems could be sunvisor panel above front windscreen... all carpets, dashboard, seats etc will fit ok. One thing to remember... 924S have some different rear seat locking mechanism which has to be replaced aether with rear seats... and will fit 924 without problems.
I think I have 924S interior in my 931-1982 so all fits ok

If you want to put 924S interior in 924 from before 1982 than you could have some problems with dashboard and vents old ones will don't fit directly... and center console is a little different (clock panels are different between 81 and 82 and you can't use them without proper center console from same year).

To expand a little on what McGyver wrote...

Most of the major components are direct fit. But there are some niggling details.

First, the HVAC, as pointed out. The 924S has the later 944 style HVAC, which is not a direct fit into an early car (and vice versa). Bulkhead openings are different, as is the heater box itself, and most of the associated HVAC tubing in that area.

Related to this, while the center consoles look tantalizingly similar, the heater controls mount in completely different ways due to the HVAC differences. I have adapted a 924S console to an early car, but going the other way would not be easy.

Also, the trim ring to which the shifter boot attaches is different between the two center consoles, as is the shape of the opening, so you can't put a 924S trim ring on an early center console and vice versa.

McGyver also mentioned the rear seat issue. The latch to which the upper rear seat catches is designed differently, and the early cars lack the correct captive bolt arrangement to use the mechanism from the 924S. So these parts aren't directly swappable without some modification.

Related to this, the rear quarter liners have openings for this latch in different places, so while they can be made to work, they are not an exact fit. May not be important to most of us, but there are differences that some of the more particular among us might care about.

On that topic as well, the fuel filler hose cover is plastic and rounded in the early cars, while it is metal with a square profile in the 924S. This affects the RHS rear quarter liner as well, as the cut out for the fuel filler has a different shape, as well as the hatch area carpet and trim details.

At this moment, I can't think of any other major differences that prevent swapping of parts. So it's basically the center console and HVAC related stuff, plus the rear seat and quarter line trim.

The early cars have a full-size spare but the later cars have a space-saver. So the later rear carpet doesn't fit unless you swap to a space-saver. Minor detail. But I ran into that problem myself.

I have newer seats in my 931 coming from 924'84 or 924S I think... I had previously old type... and that captive bolts can be swapped directly, without problems. There are just two screws holding old captive bolts in place on each side, and boot work ok with new type captive bolts... Only problem was to find proper size screw which will fit captive bolt plate and hole in body.
From my car:
Old style rear sit mounting (previously) :

New style (now):

Disagree that. Maybe in US new cars had only space saver tire but in Europe we had booth spare tires type for all years
My car has now interior from 924 from 84 or maybe 924S... don't know exactly... but it has trunk carpet with full size tire place... I had space saver so it not look such great as it could. And whole interior parts (seats, carpets, dash) was swapped from one car, so no one changed trunk carper for some older one.
