I have my '79 924 snailshell tranny going out. 1st gear just died yesterday. It will only grind and not engage. Second pops out sometimes, but i really need to get this fixed. Do i need new synchro rings or is this a bigger issue? I can do pretty much everything on this car repair wise, but trannys are a whole new game to me. What are my options? Temporary fixes, cheapest fix, and the best fix. I know Ideola has a built kit around $500 for the whole thing, but I don't know if that will do it or not. Like I said, trannys are not my area. (Yes, it is the 5 speed) |

You might be able to service first gear synchro without taking the mid-housing out, but 2nd gear probably needs to be addressed as well.
Unfortunately, the 2nd gear dog rings are temporarily NLA until the manufacturer decides to make some more. We can still get all of the synchros and the 1st gear dog ring.
I would recommend finding a repair person who knows german transmissions, rather than attempting it yourself. You might check in with your local PCA chapter to find out if there is a local expert familiar with the G15 and G50 gearboxes. If they can repair those, they can repair yours. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it. |
