I am going to be replacing all of the belts and rollers pretty soon, and i was wondering if there is an auto tensioner on this car. I do not have a belt tensioning tool and was wondering if i can change the belts and then take my car to a shop and have them adjust the belt tension? I have never done this before and am going to follow the Clark's garage instructions. Is there anything i should pay close attention to, so I don't kill my car? Should i buy the tensioning tool?
Thanks in advance to any replies and sorry for being a total nub. _________________ 1988 924S - everyday driver. |

Your '88 will have an auto tensioner if it still has the original engine. Most people would have you too afraid to change your belt without a tool, but the real danger is not changing the belt at all. Just get a feel of the tension before removing the belt and try and match it, and you'll be just fine... the auto tensioner should be pretty spot on, but I always back mine off a tiny bit. This helps the waterpump bearing last longer. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

The guys that try to convince you not to change the belt yourself, are too afraid to do it themselves. It's just a belt, and it won't break if it's a little too tight, or a little too lose, unless something is wrong with the engine... then again, some people can screw up anything.
Also, it's better to have a new belt that's tensioned wrong, than an old belt that's missing teeth...
If you need any help, let me know... I have a very easy solution to get the timing marks and balance shafts to line up... I've been meaning to post it for a long time, I just needed the motivation. _________________ '84 944 -White, Brown interior

If you do happen to find the motivation to post those tricks and tips, i'm sure nobody would be upset with you. _________________ 1988 924S - everyday driver. |
