I am going to be replacing all of the belts and rollers pretty soon, and i was wondering if there is an auto tensioner on this car. I do not have a belt tensioning tool and was wondering if i can change the belts and then take my car to a shop and have them adjust the belt tension? I have never done this before and am going to follow the Clark's garage instructions. Is there anything i should pay close attention to, so I don't kill my car? Should i buy the tensioning tool?

Thanks in advance to any replies and sorry for being a total nub.

Your '88 will have an auto tensioner if it still has the original engine. Most people would have you too afraid to change your belt without a tool, but the real danger is not changing the belt at all. Just get a feel of the tension before removing the belt and try and match it, and you'll be just fine... the auto tensioner should be pretty spot on, but I always back mine off a tiny bit. This helps the waterpump bearing last longer.

The guys that try to convince you not to change the belt yourself, are too afraid to do it themselves. It's just a belt, and it won't break if it's a little too tight, or a little too lose, unless something is wrong with the engine... then again, some people can screw up anything.

Also, it's better to have a new belt that's tensioned wrong, than an old belt that's missing teeth...

If you need any help, let me know... I have a very easy solution to get the timing marks and balance shafts to line up... I've been meaning to post it for a long time, I just needed the motivation.

If you do happen to find the motivation to post those tricks and tips, i'm sure nobody would be upset with you.
