I accessed the coupling above the old snailshell and absolutely no bushings. I cannot pull off the knuckle though. Do I have to remove the pin first? I thought the knuckle slid into the shift rod. The pin doesnt want to move. Im trying to pull it out, it just disagrees. Lend me your knowledge! I also think this is why I can get into first gear.

You have to pull the 13mm bolt at the transaxle, tap it forward off the shft rod in the transaxle. Then, the entire rod with the knuckle comes out after popping it loose from the shifter.
Once out you can push the pin out with a vice or press. _________________ Stefan

We have the knuckle in site, but dont have the tools to drop the tranny enough to get the shift rod out. We are trying to use vice grips to get the pin out. That sucker is in tight! We have clear view of it, and it looks like the pin is not very round anymore. It may be pretty worn.

What tools are you lacking to drop the trans? Pretty easy to do. . .and will make up for the hours you are spending fighting that coupler. _________________ Toofah King Bad

We did finally get the knuckle off. We didnt have a third jack to hold on to the trans. We also had to hollow out the coupling a little to get the pin to fit right. The hardest part now it getting the little elbow at the front end of the shift rod through that stupid foam at the gearbox. Its getting stuck in there. This is a much harder way to do things, but I have proven it is not impossible. However.....If you can, for future readers, take it to someone with a rack that can drop that trans and save yourself days of headache. I swapped the front bushings as well since I had it apart. I cant wait to get in it an go! Thanks for your help guys! Oh, to get the pin out, the rod wasn't fully removed so we used a tie rod puller. Worked beautifully.
