I'd love some advice on my starter woes.

Hi everyone,Be keen for some advice again!
I had starter checked out,
Had a Workshop replace brushes, they stated solenoid "may" be o.k as was full of gunk.
Refitted ran good for a week then solenoid started playing up becoming progressively worse.
Brought a new solenoid and fitted (myself this time).

I get a very clear and loud click but no turning over,If I try a few times it will engage but the small tapered cog that throws out will slip a little and turn the car over very slow.
I recharged the battery "seems" o.k.
Any ideas?
Cheers-J

While you were there, how did the wiring look?

How do the connectors at the battery look?

Hey..I cleaned the terminals at the battery with sandpaper, the wiring "looks" fine to me, gave the ring connectors a quick sand at the starter end all tight,
Connectors on the solenoid are "new" with new washers and nut's.

The wiring harness that feeds the starter/alternater is well known for getting fried with heat from the exhaust, and needs checking thoroughly.

Yep, I would renew fat wire from battery to starter as a maintenance item.

As part of the wiring harness, but inside the car
the white ignition switch at the steering column might be interfering?
It will block battery juice from flowing easily through the starter...

They're an inexpensive part and worth replacing at the age anyway. I have yet to see one in a car that was original that wasn't partially cracked. It's a matter of time.

Ill get a Ignition switch regardless,It has a pretty "soft" action and does not feel positive when i turn the key?.
I believe this is the part number 111 905 865 L and looks to be a V.W part,Ill try to sort one today...

So after tearing hair,I got a shop 30 seconds away to check out as I need to use this weekend,
So i guess the solenoid probably was not the issue but voltage is been lost between the batt and solenoid, they put a relay thingy in that pops open when the voltage hits a higher point,So at least I'm driving again....
As for the switch I found someone in town who can get me one @ $100NZD which seem a little excessive, will shop around I think.
at least today I have a new solenoid and recon starter
and a car that starts.....

You're right: 61.47 Euro sounds ridiculous for a VAG-part.
