Hi All and a merry xmas to all.
So I have this problem ,when I shift from 1st to second gear, I get a grinding noise.
I saw this, copy and paste, from an ad from someone selling a 1980 924 turbo:
-Transmission has second gear synchro issue. It’s a common issues for these Z-pattern 5 speed transmissions to have an issue with the second gear synchronizer, in order to shift to second from first, you must pause for a second or 2 for the synchro to catch up, otherwise it will grind going into gear.
What needs to be done to fix this? I too have the same problem.
Thanks

Change your transaxle fluid to redline MTL or similar, check your linkage bushes to reduce any slop and finally learn to shift slooowly between 1st/2nd. If it still grinds no matter what then maybe you'll need to rebuild the internals of the transaxle.
Here's me driving my 79 924 which is the less sturdy version of your transaxle (same shift pattern and weak syncros)

OK,
Gonna sound like a real dumb a$$ here, so please excuse that . I assume, when you say "transaxle" you mean what would be equivalent to the rear end gears on an American car. In other words, that piece that is bolted to the transmission?
I am not as dumb as this post sounds, just getting wet behind the ears on foreign cars.
Thanks

Yeah, transaxle means the combination of a transmission and the drive axle/differential.
In these cars, it is mounted in the rear and attached to the engine via a torque tube. _________________ Stefan

If the differential and transmission are contained in a single housing, it's called a transaxle. This is common for front wheel drive cars, but is also found in some other cars (like ours). _________________ 78 924 NA

I also find that the shifts are a bit smoother when the tranny has warmed up a bit, and making sure I depress the clutch all the way in when changing from 1st to 2nd, from 2nd to 1st, and when going into reverse also helps. _________________ 1981 932 with mods:
