|
|
On my '87 924 S, I just got done doing a headgasket and timing belt job..
a few various issues I'm still trying to figure out, but now that I'm trying to test for the first time- the trans won't seem to go into reverse and has slight difficulty going into other gears.
It feels like a shifter-linkage issue. I don't even know how the shifter linkage setup works in these cars!
Related- not sure. The clutch TOB was always making noise when I pushed in the clutch for the past year I owned this car.
Now, the TOB makes more noise than ever when clutch is depressed.
Pedal effort is still completely normal though, I believe the hydraulics are working perfectly and bearing is pushing on the pressure plate fingers correctly.
Any tips? I don't know what I could have bumped or caused interference, in the process of doing the head job..
Engine makes a whine too, sounds like timing belt or balance shaft belt, I didn't have the porsche tools to set timing belt tension when I did the job.. this is the next big thing I have to address _________________ '87 924 S |

The 944 uses the same linkage (and same basic transaxle) as the 924 from 1980-on. Lots of info on the web about how to check and service the linkage in a 944.
http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/trans-07.htm
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-924-944-968-technical-forum/679755-stubborn-reverse.html
Can you access other gears?
If you can, then your problem may be internal to the transaxle. I would suggest replacing the transaxle fluid with a good product, like Redline, etc.
While it is in gear, is the shifter able to move side to side when it is in gear?
If so, 1/8" of movement is normal, more than that and you have a worn shifter pin and will need to choose the repair method you'd like to take.
On my 944 turbo, I cut the pin off, drilled and tapped it for a 10mm bolt and used a pair of 10mm x 3mm thrust bearings to carry the load with a nut to lock the bolt in place along with some locktite.
There are several companies online that make improved shifter solutions, like Only944:

Does this bolt with a 1/2" or 13mm head, & washers & nut, look familiar?
It was on the side of my car, didn't get re-installed somewhere..
The shifter feels loose, like something was removed and not properly re-installed, did not feel like this before I was working on the car.
But I didn't think I messed with any shifter linkage stuff.. _________________ '87 924 S |

Sounds like you've got a worn out shifter. Follow the instructions in the Clarks-garage.com link I posted and repair from there.
As to the bolt? It doesn't look obviously familiar. _________________ Stefan

I f'd up.
I broke off the bolt which holds the shifter linkage 'stabilizer rod' to the top of the transaxle. I don't think this can be fixed without removing the transmission to extract the broken bolt.
I have listed my car for sale locally as-is

(there are pics of the issue on KSL there) _________________ '87 924 S |

Transaxle removal takes a couple of hours. Get at it.
Only944 sells an improved stabilizer bar that includes a new bolt. _________________ Stefan

I was selling car anyway, its too bad this was the last straw for me.
I sold the car to a local highschool auto shop teacher who also owns a 924 turbo, so I'm glad it went to a good new owner. _________________ '87 924 S |
