The AC compressor seems to be the same Nippondenso unit that also went into many a 1980s vintage Japanese car (corolla, RX7 and a few others). In my experience compressors and condensors designed for R12 rarely work well with R134. I will be using a custom much improved aluminum condensor for my car. I can get VintageAir Ac compressor for a couple of hundred bucks from Summit that allegedly is a direct bolt-on.
Has anyone on this forum found a fitting R134 AC compressor for 931? Are they the same as early 944? |

They are not the same as the early 944. But the Sanden 508 is an easy bolt on. I did a conversion on my last 924 (79) and all i did was put on the new fittings and used the seal conditioner/oil. The condenser is aluminum serpentine type (at least on the 79) and mine was bent up. With R134a I got 42 degrees at the center vent with the blower on high when it was 85-90 outside. Although I did update the heat/Ac unit to the late 82 and later style like the early 944 has. Mostly what you get with this is a much better blower. I had the car with R134a for about 4 years and never needed to add any additional R134a. _________________ 84 944--924 Carrera GTS clone w/520HP Chevy 302 V8--RUNNING!

Thanks for the info, v8. So a Sanden 508 would be a direct bolt-on for my 1981 932? These are cheaper than those Summit is selling, and new rather than remanufactured. _________________ 1981 932 with mods:

The Sanden should be east to install. It mounts almost the same. I seem to remember that you need to oval out a couple of holes in the Nippondenso brackets but I think the hose connections are the same as long as you get one with the older R12 fittings. Otherwise you will need to have the hose ends at the compressor replaced with o-ring type. The early (pre 79) used this same compressor except the company was called Sankio then. _________________ 84 944--924 Carrera GTS clone w/520HP Chevy 302 V8--RUNNING!
