|
|
So thinking out loud here,...
Many of you may, or may not know, I am a programmer/hardware prototype developer for various projects.
Tesla, has a massive 17" touch screen in the car that controls climate and media. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in this for their own vehicle. Basically, how it would work is I would use a Android tablet with a modded I/O board to control the climate, take GM's digital climate system for example. All I would have to do is make a custom GUI screen and mod the inputs/outputs to control their climate system.
The goal would to completely remove the center console's cluster and replace it with a touch screen removing the 3 gauges, the climate center, and the radio. The 3 gauges would be represented with digital ones, or moved to the vastly empty fake speaker opening on the dash board.
What do you think?

I could see a drop-in solution for that stupid center speaker location, but I think it might look out of place in a 924. Which has always struck me as more of a "classic" sports car full of analog gauges (or at least they look analog) and controls.
I think to make it work, you'd have to update more of the interior look and materials to match.
Maybe in a later 944 where you could replace the stock cubby and radio with a double din sized solution.
Interesting thought though. _________________ Stefan

Yea, I could see this more in a late 944 with the rounded interior.
I know the guys who make the body components for the Ariel Atom here state side. I know they could make a mold and glass (or composite) out 3 gauge cluster in that one spot easily, probably even make it fit in the snap in spots. The quickest solution would be to just grab some felt, glass and a spare speaker outlet. Then again, who knows,. maybe someone already makes this. |

IMHO touchscreen is not for car controls. Instead of operating traditional climate and stereo by feel you need to look where your fingers are on the screen. It definitely disrupts your traffic situation control. _________________ WBR, Shurick

This is true,.. but you could pre-program presets based on internal or external temps or possibly voice commands (thought that may take some additional effort) |

Integrating with the GM climate controls will be a pain, since it's all done over CAN bus now... _________________ Vaughan Scott

I feel like it would be cost prohibitive and it would require too many hours to ever be considered viable. In addition, these cars are, no offense, pretty loud and crude as it is, and adding this would feel out of place in such a car unless other extensive modifications were made.
Just my two cents. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 - sold

Our touchscreen display that we make for train operators would plug right in then. Ethernet, CAN, Lonworks, 232, 422, 485. . . I'm sure there's more on there that I'm forgetting. _________________ 78 924 NA
