My 1978 924 was sitting in a field from 2002 until last month, when I bought it. Miraculously, with just fresh gas & a new battery, the car fired up and runs well. The trouble is that none of the gauges or lights work (except the cable-driven speedometer). I suspected a bad ground and regrounded the body. From experience with old VWs, I'm thinking I may have to replace the fuse box. Electrons and I don't get along well, so does anyone have any troubleshooting advice?

There is a bunch of earths up by the fuse/relay board, some on the front of each chassis rail below the headlamps, and some above the spare wheel well behind the numberplate, all of which benefit from cleaning. There is also one (I think) in behind the instrument panel.

If you are not already aware of them, the wiring diagrams for your car are on line courtesy of Pelican Parts's page Porsche 924/944 Electrical Diagrams which should help in your diagnosis.

The lights for coolant temperature indicator, fuel gauge, speedometer illumination, and tachometer illumination, linked to the instrument panel potentiometer, are on current track II/7 which connects to heater control, clock, voltmeter, oil pressure, and clock on track III/10 which goes through the emergency flasher switch to the hazard/turn signal flasher.

If the emergency flasher switch works, and the high beam indicator light work, odds are the ground near the fuse/relay board and/or the ground near the distributor is faulty. But as scm924s recommends, all grounds should be tended to. Replacement of the fuse box isn't advisable until grounds, fuses, appropriate relays, and wiring continuities are checked.

be aware the black wire is NOT the ground wire on these cars. The brown wire is.
