My CV joints are quite worn, so I investigated to see which VW part could be used. Apparently joints from the old VW bus are the same, so I ordered 4 pcs of the brand "Mapco" Less than half the price of e.g. high quality SKF.

I figured that since I don't drive that much, they might be OK.

Today I removed a shaft from the car and took the old joints off. The diameter and spline count was the same, as was the hole pattern. But I was quite disappointed to see that the tolerance between the splines on the shaft and splines on the joint was quite large. The old joints fits perfectly on the splines.

Can I assume that there is a slight difference in the spline dimension between the 924 and the VW parts ? I have a hard time believing that.

Or did I just buy a lousy product ?

I'm going to return them, the large tolerance will probably destroy the splines, and there will also be a "clunk" noise now and then. (as there is now)

Ok, let me put it this way.

You have a CV joint that comes out of a VW box and one that comes out of a Porsche box, which one fits?

I bought one (actually 4) that comes out of a (aftermarket)VW box and it fits, yes, but the spline tolerance is too large, the joint is loose on the shaft, and this will not work.

So the question is; why does the VW part fit terribly?

Is it because I bought a crappy aftermarket product that doesn't get the tolerances right, or is there a slight difference between the Porsche and the VW joints ?

You are 100% correct, there should be no play on the splines. I do know for sure that the cv's from a mid 80's VW Vanagon fit. Buy some good quality Empi or Lowbro and you will be good. Unless your splines are worn ?

The splines on the shaft looks fine, and the old joints fits perfectly on the splines, no play.

I installed the old joints onto the shaft again and back into the car with it, so the car can drive again. I don't want to have to too much down time, now that my summer vacation just started

The old joints will not fall apart, so I can drive some time, until I find a good offer on a high quality brand.

The ones I have bought are probably just too cheap.

The genuine joints rarely wear out unless the boot has split and the grease has leaked out. I have rebuilt many of these by just washing them out and regreasing then fitting new boots.
