|
|
I don't have any pictures right now, but it looks like I'm missing some trim around the windshield. There's an inch or so gap between the windshield glass itself, and the metal bands that go up the sides. It looks like there should be a piece of rubber in there or something. I ordered part Nos. 94455904500 and 94455904600 (Part #2 below) thinking it was the missing trim.
However, the more I look at it, the more I think that those are the metal strips that I already have on there. I've got a large gap between what now seems to be Part 2 and the windscreen. Maybe 2B is what I'm missing? But there's no part No. listed for 2B...
Part 8 in the following fiche looks more like what is missing, but the part number is mysteriously absent there also. However, that looks to be one piece, and the top of the windshield doesn't have the gap...
Anybody have any insight on this? Is that gap on the sides a normal thing? Hopefully I explained it well enough, I'll try to put a few more pic up when I'm back at the car tomorrow. _________________ 1980 924 N/A

The parts you are looking for are 944.559.027.00 and 944.559.028.00 (callout 2B from that illustration above). These are molded rubber gaskets that fit into the gap you describe. The reason they are not listed in the PET you are looking at is because they were never made for the US-market cars until the 1987-88 924S. I have no idea why they would be depicted on the illustration but not listed in the parts listing, other than illustration 810 is the same in the 79-85 924 PET as it is in the 86-88 924S PET (lazy publishing???!).
These two rubber gaskets retail for about $38 each, I can order them for you if you'd like. Or, you can find someone parting out a 924S or a pre-flush-mount-windshield 944 (thru-1985.5) and get them used. In my experience, they don't take much abuse, and the three sets I've removed from various donor cars have all been in great shape and happily used on my 941, 931 Club Sport, and soon on the DProd tribute car.
Incidentally, you might also be interested in getting part number 944.559.043.00, which has the angled face to it rather than the square cross section on the early cars. Makes a marginal improvement to wind noise when used in conjunction with those rubber gaskets. A bit more pricey new (retails for about $120), but can also be sourced from the same donor cars mentioned above (provided you can get it removed and shipped without kinks or bends).
If you look carefully at this photo of my 941, you can see the gasket and the angled top piece:
You might also consider doing the "smooth rain channel" upgrade while you're at it _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Thanks ideola, your post helps out a lot. Since I'm such a fan of the "measure twice, cut once" mentality...
Part 2 is the metal band I'm pointing to I this picture:
Part 2B is the rubber gasket that will fill this gap:
I've been ordering parts from dcauto.com. I've got an open order that they're holding until I get this sorted out, which it looks like I have! They also have that angled top piece in stock, listed for a whopping $40. I'll have them add it to my order.
I apologize if my pics come out a little funky, I'm doing all this from my phone this morning. _________________ 1980 924 N/A |

I'll look at Partsheaven in the future. dcauto has a lot of stuff, but their customer service... eh... I just had the guy on the phone and he sounded like he couldn't be bothered... _________________ 1980 924 N/A |

If you wanted to spend the money you could put a late flush mounted windshield.
I don't have the rubber trim on yet. _________________ 84 944--924 Carrera GTS clone w/520HP Chevy 302 V8--RUNNING!

Its not a big deal as far as windshield installs go. There are a few different windshields. What you need depends on what type of windshield you're installing. If you use a windshield with the encasement, the Trim seal is a press in after the fact. If your using one without encasement, the trim seal (which you can get a genaric from a glass shop) is installed on the glass before install. Both types are glued in with a urethane sealant. |

I just used the late windshield that already has the thick rubber surround attached. All you need to do is remove the trim studs in the windshield frame and glue in the windshield. (special primer and urethane windshield adhesive) To finish you just need the factory rubber trim which is available everywhere. This part pushed into a slot that is in the rubber surround--it isn't glued in like most cars. _________________ 84 944--924 Carrera GTS clone w/520HP Chevy 302 V8--RUNNING!
