I was going around 35mph on a well paved road through a small town at night. The pothole was the perfect Porsche trap - bent the rim and indented wheel a bit, also busted some threads in the steel belt tire. Holds air, but not suitable for high speed corners. (Of course it was a new tire).

Anyway, I have a post in the parts wanted forum but was wondering if the rim can be fixed by a good shop - I expect that it would require heating and bending. It's a typical 4 lug spyder web from an '82 924 NA. Anyone have experience with bent rims? Thanks in advance. - Peter

Tire shop was reluctant to bend rim. I'm thinking of trying to bend the rim back using a hardwood shaft & small sledge hammer. The rim still holds air in the tire - if impact can bend the rim in, maybe an opposite impact can bend it back.

This guy fixes rims. I went there for a high speed balance. Can't vouch for his work on wheels, but he is definitely a character.

Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.

Thanks for the post Coyle - seems like an interesting place. Since I'm about 350 miles from Long Island and local tire shops don't want to deal with a bent rim ...... I decided to try the judicious use of force to bend the rim back with the tire still mounted.

I first tried a hardwood shaft on the rim struck with a 10 lb hammer... just managed to cut the hardwood. Next used a 3ft steel bar with a tapered tip about 1in wide and struck it with the hammer. Increased force and the rim bent back. The rim seems to be somewhat malleable. I think I saved the rim. I need to have a new tire mounted because the impact broke the steel belts. I'll post pictures of the final outcome.

PS please complete the poll question - now it seems like most 924s are running without a timing belt cover.

I run my timing cover. I don't know why people don't. It's not as if they are hard to remove and on the 931's you can lunch a motor if you get a rock in the timing belt.
