Ok, so I'm on a bit of a run at the moment doing bits and bobs to my car. I decided to check and set my valve clearances. I wasn't expecting this ! Just to make it clear that I have been using my car short trips and longer runs to shows in the long past summer were it we quite happily cruised at 3 figure speeds. On tick over it was quite quiet, revved hard with the bonnet up was rough and noisy (aren't they all I hear some say).
Four out of the eight lobes are SERIOUSLY worn. Both inlet and exhuast. I have seen pictures like this on the forum before, but there's no harm in reminding folk what can happen.
That's a 10mm wear patch, almost flat!
I stripped the head on two spare engines looking for a replacement, both had a small amount of wear on a single lobe so I carried on searching and found a spare in my garage that was 100% good to go. For those in the know you will know the culprit...the oil feed tube blocked. I think every time I change the oil now I will be checking those little holes! |
