Has anyone attempted to rebuild their own turbo? I'd like to rebuild mine but having done is not in the budget.

Ko3, nothing is wrong with it. I would just like to have it refreshed as it came off a 189k mile engine.

You shouldn't have a problem. Make sure you index everything (especially the impeller to the shaft) & make sure everything is within tolerance (especially the thrust).

I did my own complete turbo rebuild. It is not all that difficult, the hard part , for me, was getting the turbo back into the car.

If you index properly when disassembling (photos are a good idea, too), it will make the reassembly much easier. I used a lathe and dial indicator to check the shaft run-out, and also to spin it after assembly. The turbo worked fantastic after the rebuild.

The reason I had to rebuild mine was that the PO dropped one of the ducting screws into the cold side , and didn't bother to go after it. I guess he realized his mistake after the vanes were ground off. He couldn't figure out why it ran so poorly and had no power.
