I thought this issue was my tie rods but I had the car on ramps and could wiggle the steering column in the rack and pinion and didn't think it was supposed to do that. Like wiggle it a inch or so and not have it turn anything.

Does my rack and pinion need to be replaced?

I can probably post a video.

I tried to search the archives but didn't see this problem.

Symptoms of rack & pinion issues are typically:

Steering may get noisy or jerky and lose its ability to turn.
Power steering fluid leak.
Clunk when turning or going over bumps.
Turn easily in one direction, but not the other.

Are you having any of these issues?

Could be the u-joints that connect the rack to the column.

There is a bearing under the plate with two screws that is under the plastic cover at the input shaft (where the shaft with the u joints goes onto). Sounds like that bearing is shot. Yes, you would need a new rack unless you can pull the bearing out & match it up. I don't think Porsche sells it seperatly.

remove the steering rack and intermediate shaft,
Grab the steering wheel and try and move it up and down to check the ignition housing bearing and plastic collar are ok.
Next grab the stub left at the firewall and wiggle it to check for playin the lower bearing
Next twist the intermediate shaft knuckles to check for wear, both ends obviously
Lastly the rack, if you put the locking bolt in the underside you can pull the tie rods to check for wear and then check the rack itself after this
I've at one stage or another replaced all these components from wear abd tear, the rack and shaft were the most exy..

I'll post a video later today and it will explain the problem better than I can.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Your temp gauge crept up a bit high while you were idling, are your radiator fans functioning correctly?

To me that U-joint looked ok, I'm thinking its in the rack.

the fans are working okay i think the gauge runs a bit high due to a grounding issue in the dash.

if i tap it the temp goes down

I see. Lol

If you've checked the tie rods, ball joints, wheel bearings, u-joints in the steering linkage..... You can tighten up the steering rack by the adjuster on the front of the rack. You may also want to have the front tires balanced.

Its on the front-center of the steering rack. There is a diamond shaped plate with 2 bolts on the sides with the adjuster in the middle. The adjusting screw has a large thin but around it to lock it down from moving.
You can find pics & adjusting procedure in the Haynes manual.

ianporsche on ebay sold me a bush for the steering column top bearing, old plastic ones are often broken, you just pull the steering wheel off and slide it in and the column stops the top end rattle
the linkages on the column can wear out too
anyone know where to get them refurbished or replaced?
cheers
