Hi all!
I'm new to 924/931s but I'm a tech so i know my way around a wrench :p
So that being said I came across a $500 82 931 with supposedly 69k original miles. Bad part is it doesn't run the guy says"it would start with starter fluid but now it has a very weak spark"
To me it sounds like a fuel delivery problem so is there anything I can look at pretty quick during my walk around to try and figure out what the issue is?
And in an absolute worst case scenario can I part it out and get my money back in an attempt to pick up a cleaner one?
Thanks in advance for the help |

931 Resuscitation - how to resurrect a long-dead turbo
http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=22724
You ever play with Bosch K-Jectronic fuel injection before? It's a whole other animal.. Manual/hydraulic fuel injection, not EFI..
It being an 82 means that its a series 2 931 witch has a more complicated, but higher performance ignition system, DITC (digital ignition timing control). The main box is located behind the radio/under the heater system, try wiggling the connector and cleaning, make sure thats good..
Some say the 82 s2 is the most desirable 931, they have there pro's and cons..
Check for rust under the battery, a hole there will put water in the passengers floor board, but on a $500 car I'd just be thankful if it didn't..

pull no 1 spark plug and have a look at it, this will tell you allot about the engine... take four new plugs and install them, the 931 has fairly easy access for this as they're on the top side of the head...stupid n/a...
that being said, cars generally don't like sitting around...
probably need a freshly charged battery with you and some jumper leads for it, if it does start check the exhaust colour... there will probably be a little condensation but no excessive white smoke... i.e coolant leaks... if excessively black, mixture is too rich but engine most likely ok, blueish colour burning oil, probably piston rings or turbo seals
if you are prepared to do a compression test across the cylinders and see if there even, somewhere in the 140 range would be good, higher great, lower may need a rebuild...
if you have the time and energy to part maybe, or keep as a parts car for your other build... that being said with the age of these cars what parts look great on the surface can be corroded and decimated underneath, only way to check sometimes is to pull them apart and measure tolerances...
btw, check the cam timing before you start the motor as they are interferance design motors, and turning them over by hand can destroy valves/pistons, make sure it hasn't jumped teeth on the belt _________________ 1981 ROW 924 Turbo -

It may be wise not to try to get it running or turn it over too much if it has been sitting a very long time until you can put a new timing belt on it... Ask the seller about the timing belt age..
Don't worry, they are stupid cheap and easy to do.. But not doing it could, well, you should know.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

This will be great if I can get the car and I read the faqs so i'm now educated enough to be dangerous
I have a ford background so I've never worked with bosch FI but i understand the theory of it and I'm always up for a challenge.
I spoke with the owner and he only had two pics and won't take more. He also doesn't know the last time it ran or when the timing belt was changed last so I won't be spinning the engine over when I go check it out. |

hmmm I think as a first 931 I would suggest a running car, sounds ominous... _________________ 1981 ROW 924 Turbo -

well it does run, just not on its own. the owner can get it to run off starting fluid. I'd rather not do that when i go look at it because of the timing belt.
Based on what the owner was saying it appears he bought the car in an attempt to fix it, found it was too far out of his wheelhouse and is now trying to sell it. |

I would also be very concerned about the overall state of a $500 car. Once you get it started then you can determine what else needs to be fixed. The transmission could be an issue, the oil cooler seals will probably need changing along with all the hoses in the engine area, the entire suspension might need to be refreshed, the electrical could be screwed up....$$$$$$$$$$
If you got the money, time and skills to deal with all that...then go for it. I am all for saving a 924 from the car graveyard. If not, then spend $5,000 and get a car that has been well maintained and running perfect. _________________ MOD

It totally could not even be a fixable candidate, a parts car wouldn't be very useful if it's your only one..
But as a parts car that's got all the goodies.
I would use the entire intake, exhaust manifold, updated turbo breather, flywheel (fits 915 pp), cam/buckets, and hatch, right off the bat as upgrades/fixes to mine..
It would be sensible for me to use the trans/tt assy if I decide against the snail, it has a whole 5 lug swap under it, maybe could have cut the battery box out of it, spare set of wheels and everything else..
To me its almost a no brainer..
But as a candidate to get running and fix up? Theres the gamble, Free could be too much.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

So i went and checked it out this evening and got the whole story on it.
Apparently this car sat for years before the current owner bought it and planned on fixing it and giving it to a friend who then moved away so it sat some more and now he wants to sell it to free up space.
The car is a little rougher than advertised the front seats are shot the dash is cracked like a mother, the shift boot is torn and dried out bezel for the speedo has pitted and rusted a bit and theres waterleaks presumably from the sunroof which unfortunately has led to mold.
The paint is faded with the clear coat gone in spots the rear windshield wiper arm is missing luckily there is no real damage but some trim is gone.
But on the brightside it is a 99% complete car, the engine and trans are relatively leak free for a 33 year old car the battery tray isnt rusted through and im fairly certain that going over the wiring and replacing whichever fuel pump is bad will get it running to point i can see what else it needs. And apart from the aforementioned interior issues the rest of it is in pretty good shape if not a little dirty.
So now I'm torn part of me would really like the challenge of bringing this back from the brink but on the other hand she is pretty rough and may be better served helping other 924s stay on the road. decisions, decisions...... |

That thing looks quite rough but worth saving. OO checked the box for sport seats, what other boxes did he check? _________________ Toofah King Bad
