Hey all,
I bought a non-running '82 924 that I've been working on over the course of the last months. We have spent a lot of time working to get it running, but I feel like we're missing something silly. When trying to start you can hear the fuel pump running, the timing belt spins, the tach moves a little, and if in gear the car moves forward a tiny bit. Here's a list of everything I've done, in no particular order.
Replaced all 4 injectors with brand new injectors
Removed every line from fuel dist and blew them out, replacing some
Changed fuel filter in engine bay
Siphoned out all gas in tank and put 1/2 tank of new gas in
New battery
Checked fuel pump fuse with multimeter, not blown
Jumped fuel pump relay pins 30 +87, no start
Checked spark plug wires with tester, all good
Checked spark plug wire order, all good
Tried starting with starter fluid
Confirmed fuel is making it to injectors by flow test
Supposedly the previous owner replaced the spark plugs, the spark plug wires and the cold start valve. I'm going to replace the spark plugs again. I'm running out of ideas and would love some new directions to look. Thank you so much! _________________ 1982 Porsche 924 ROW |

check cam timing?
Make sure the detent dot on the back of the cam pulley meets its pointer on the valve cover at the same time the crank pulley notch meets its pointer on the oil pump housing down there.. cam lines up on #1 TDC compression stroke, every other crank revolution so your crank pulley will line up once with the cam 180 out and then the next revolution both marks should line up exactly..
If you find it to be incorrect just loosen the cam belt tensioner and reinstall it aligned correctly, you kinda have to go past the cam mark a touch clockwise from front to get the belt notches on and then the belt tension will pull it back.
If that doesn't do it, manually check for TDC on cylinder #1 with a dowel in the spark plug hole and confirm the crank pulley hasn't sheared its locating pin off and is out of time itself..
This will also skew ignition timing by the distributor running off the cam if its out..

It sounds like you've got fuel and spark, so it should start or at least try.
Cam/Ignition timing would be my guess as well. Especially if you don't know whether the belt was installed properly.
If it is off and corrected you'll likely have to reset the ignition timing on the distributor. One step at a time though.
One thing to be aware of with these cars (and I don't know why exactly) is that they are oddly sensitive to fouled plugs. I would clean the plugs well and then hit the ends of the plugs with a propane torch to burn off the excess fuel after verifying the timing, etc. That seems to help me when I've had issues with starting, then again, maybe its just me. _________________ Stefan

So update, I pulled the plugs and wires today to not only find out that the previous owner broke the little tiny caps off of the plugs into the wire, but the plugs and wires and not for the 924.... lol.
I checked the 924.org parts list where it describes what other parts you can use, I checked autozone and searched the forum and I can't find anywhere that says that these are the correct plugs or wires. Regardless they were definitely fouled and I replaced them with new proper plugs. I'm awaiting the wires and cap and rotor, but does anyone know if Bosh WR6DC+ fit the 924? That's what the previous owner used. I got NGK 5534 which Autozone said fit.
Could this be the cause of my no start? I'd be excited if so! _________________ 1982 Porsche 924 ROW |

You can resistor plugs and generic plug wires to get away from the Porsche plug wires with the resistors built into them and the tiny little plug ends.
That said, broken plug ends and/or wires will certainly cause all sorts of issues. _________________ Stefan

Be aware, there is a dot and a dot of yellow paint on the gear wheel, be sure you're aligning the correct one!
