Ok, so I decided to change my distributor cap & rotor on my '80 924 NA.

I was careful to mark the wires and their positions prior to disconnecting the wires and removing the cap; however, I somehow mixed them up.

I went back through and tried connecting them in order to go around the cap 1-3-4-2, (clockwise) as marked on my valve cover, with one being the farthest from the front of the engine but when I tried starting it, no dice.

What's the best way to fix this without damaging my engine?

Cylinder 1 is the front.

I got that, my problem is where on the distributor cap do I land the #1 wire?

when I tried to start it, there was a backfire and a puff of white smoke.

So, I think i need to pull off the spark plug wires from the distributor cap & start over with the connections.

I found some articles which mentioned finding TDC, but am not sure how to start, and couldn't find any marks on the distributor which indicate where to land the #1 cylinder wire.

On my original post, I think my question may have been unclear. I landed the wire from #1 cylinder (closest to the front of the car) to the position on the distributor cap at about 1:00 (as viewed from the front of the engine looking toward the fire wall, then went clockise from there.

Thanks

Back to basics. . .you need to set crank and cam to TDC per the manual, that will tell you where ignition wire #1 goes.

With crank and cam at TDC, the rotor will point to the #1 terminal on the dizzy cap.

OK, I was afraid of that. Will I find the instructions for that in the Haynes' manual?

Yes. Its not difficult. Rotate the engine by hand, watch for the #1 intake valve to open & close then feel the #1 piston come to tdc (its highest point in the cylinder) with a screwdriver through the spark plug hole. You are then on tdc. Be careful & go slow so you don't bind on the screwdriver.

Or just use the TDC marker on the cam pulley. . .

Ok - is that the one on the timing belt? Not enthused about sticking things into the spark plug hole

When I rotate the engine, does it turn clockwise?
