PostPosted: Mon Feb 01, 2016 4:34 am    Post subject: Battery Box Reply with quote

I have never had to replace the battery box before so I don't know where is best to cut it out of a car. Since I have 2 shells here to scrap and both have excellent trays I would like some advice on the best place to chop them out.

Thanks,
Leigh

Ideally you should cut about 2 inches below the firewall spot welds. Up into and around the wheel well. Cut the a-pilar at the corner of the windshield. Basically take out that whole upper quarter of the car? Why so much? Because anyone with a rotten battery box is likely going to have rust in the rat trap of the upper tray support (the piece with the 3 rubber plugs) which will also attack the wheel well. Ask me how I know? I had what looked like a battery box with just some heavy surface rust and a poke into the rat trap revealed nothing but iron oxide dust towards the rear.

A sawzall works best. You can use a cutoff wheel if you want to as long as you can get deep enough, lots of sparks & burning undercoating though. Ideally, you would saw through the A pillar, dash structure (through the fan hole saves time) & through the firewall, door post and horizontally a couple inches below the tray its self.

For a clean rust free battery box would you take a hundred plus shipping?

I can cut them out using a sawzall with a long blade in 10 minutes or less. Typical price is $100-$125. I would say more if you didn't intend on taking everything off the car necessary to cut it out.
I had junkyards claim it was going to take 3-4 hours for their guy to cut it out, blah blah blah.

I would say that's a fair offer considering the car is stripped already.

Seems like a crime to part the cars out & not save the boxes, even if the payout isn't as lucrative as other parts.
A sawzall can be had for cheap, makes the job really easy.
You could cut the box out smaller if the customer doesn't need that much. The way I described will take a bit more to ship but it gets everything they could need & is the easiest way to cut it out.

Well today was a good day here. Power Tryp came by on his way to the Island and brought a nice new Sawzall along. We did some 4077th M.A.S.H. type field surgery to the black shell and got the battery box out. It isn't 100% rust free but is pretty close for these cars.

Top view, surface rust only, front battery hold down screw is snapped off :

Bottom view :

3/32"nds diameter hole beside drain channel :

All in all I would rate this box as an 8 out of 10. There are two very small spots of rust but that's it. The tray has NOT been previously repaired in any way. The small 3/32" hole goes through into the box section of the unibody and the rust on the backside is very minimal. Tomorrow when the light is better I will try to get a photo inside the tunnel.

Anyone wants this let me know.
