Hey I made a post in the parts for sale section several days ago, but nobody has replied to it. Here's the link:

http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=5710

I'm hoping that by posting it here I might get more people to check it out. I still don't know what a reasonable price should be for the car. What do you guys think?

I think most of us hate to respond to these because it reminds us just how little our cars are worth. Yours is a 77.5 in the need of body work right? I do not recall the mileage. Anyway consider this. A nice 1982 just went for $2K I believe. So yours is 5 years older and in need of work. I do not think you are going to get any more than $1500 for it. More likely you are going to get offers of about $1k.

Another example. I recently purchased a 1980 with 76K miles on it. Has new rubber, leather 944 seats (drivers power but with one rip), recent exhaust and basically solid. It needed an exhaust pipe, engine mounts and a basic tune up. It also likely needs a throw out bearing. (noisy) I only paid $500 for it. Oh and paint is faded. PO was asking $750 and was selling it for some time.

Good luck with the sale. I suggest you just fix the issues over time and keep the car. They are begining to catch on with some folks and prices have been going up in certain regions.

Ride the wave but do not expect it to be a tidal wive.

Eric

Price is not that big of a concern for me. I just want to sell it because I bought a 944 and don't really drive the 924 anymore. All of my time and money go into in the 944 now.

Okay, here I'll make a list of things I know about the car. Keep in mind that I was using the 924 as a daily driver for almost 6 months. It is totally drivable. Most of the problems I'm about to list are not very critical. They're more like minor annoyances.

- As of March 1999, the car had between 200,000 and 225,000 miles on it, but the engine had been replaced in 1987 with a rebuilt one. That rebuilt engine had about 90,000 miles on it at the time.
- The head was rebuilt in March 1998.
- The driver's door lock sometimes locks by merely shutting the door. This makes it easy to lock yourself out.
- The odometer is broken. I tried to fix it, but it still only works intermittently now.
- Occasionally, the windshield wipers turn on for a second or so by themselves. I think it seems to happen when you hit a bump while turning or something.
- The body has 2 minor dents: one on the right-rear, and one in the front-left. They can be seen here:

- The paint has chips and scratches here and there (which should be expected from such an old car), but overall I think it's in pretty good shape.
- It has fabric seats but they are torn, so I put seat covers on them. Here's what they look like:

- The engine consumes oil, but it still passes the California smog test (which is more strict than other places). It's probably not a major problem, because the amount of consumption is not more than what's listed in the specifications. It's a good idea to check the oil level once a week though.
- I think the tail lights don't seal properly, as water gets in to the area behind the rear wheel wells after it rains.
- There is a clunk sound when braking at low speeds. I haven't looked into it at all.
- The engine needs a tune-up; cold-starting is pretty weak right now.
- The tires are pretty old, but they still have plenty of tread.
- After having many problems with the engine overheating, I finally bypassed the thermoswitch for the radiator fan, so operation of the fan is completely manual now. You can see the switch in this photo (it's the red one):
http://www.nofadz.com/cq3/924/2002_0503_02.jpg
- If you slam the driver's door too hard, the mirror attached to it will pivot and you'll have to re-adjust it.
- Someone broke the driver-side window right after I first got the car. I replaced the window, but now if you shut the door while the window is only partially up, it rattles a bit. If the window is all the way up, it's fine though.
- The suspension is exceedingly stiff. I think someone put in the wrong shock absorbers, because even the tiniest bump feels really harsh (and loud) in the 924.
- The switch for the passenger door that turns on the overhead light is broken.

Given all of that, do you think $500 would be a reasonable price?

I think $500 is a reasonable asking price. Then let the market decide. I think any car for less than $500 that runs is a reasonable price. Let alone a Porsche. Just tell it like it is. Good every day car not a garage queen.

Good luck

Eric

hehe, that's funny. i bought a $700 924 with exactly the problems that Eturbo924 said to just have something to drive while I work on my 944. turns out that the car was cheap, the issues with the 924 were simple issues that just took a little "information" and were ultimately easy to fix. the fun part is having a car to drive that has good gas mileage - i don't know, at least it's still a porsche and i dig these cars.

anyhow, hopefully i won't have to fix both of them at the same time <fingers are crossed>!

(btw: the fan not working when the ignition is turned on was a result of a half melted relay/fuse board that didn't allow the terminals to properly sit/connect and thus, were flaky, among other things, replacement was $25 from Parts Heaven).
